Lakers Fast Break

The Lakers head out on the road for a quick stop in Portland as the first game in a weekend back-to-back on Saturday night. And with several players out of the lineup, the makeshift rotation of LeBron James (20 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists), Marcus Smart (25 points), and a bevy of young players, including two-way player Drew Timme (21 points), couldn't fix the defense as their defending woes continued in a 132-116 thumping by the Blazers. The Lakers on Thursday night looked to put some distance between themselves and the Suns and Rockets as they faced the Charlotte Hornets in the Crypt. And while getting off to a hot start (39 points in the first quarter-Luka with 19 of them) wasn't normal as of late, the bad defense against poor teams continued as the Lakers got lit up for 20 threes (9 by LaMelo Ball) as Charlotte with their shooting splits of 54-47-94 tore into the Lakers defense time and time again, and even with Luka Doncic (39 points) and LeBron James (29 points, 9 rebounds) making their share of the scoring, the rest of the roster could not slow down the Hornets as they pull away for an easy 135-117 win over LA. The Lakers come back home after getting embarrassed in Sacramento with the second in a back-to-back against the Atlanta Hawks. And after such a poor effort, for three of the four quarters they got the exact opposite with LeBron James (31 points 9 rebounds, 10 assists) playing in his first back-to-back feeling good, and Luka Doncic (27 points, 12 assists), Deandre Ayton (17 points, 18 rebounds), and the starting lineup all in double figures as they rocketed out to 81 point first half and kept the lead above ten throughout the rest of the game as they ended up cruising to a 141-116 victory over the Hawks. The Lakers close out 2025 with a matchup against the Detroit Pistons. The Lakers hoped to end their losing skid as they continued the homestand with a Sunday night matchup with the Sacramento Kings. And after listening to Coach JJ Redick's outbursts to the press, and getting to be a full witness to more at practice on Saturday, the Lakers did come out more defensively as they turned in a small lead in the first quarter to a much larger one in the second and third with more effort on the defensive end (a season-high 14 steals). The Lakers finish off the current road trip before Christmas with a return to Phoenix as they face off against a revenge-minded Suns team for what happened in a Lakers win nine days earlier. But the Lakers' problems on defense continued as a returning Austin Reaves (17 points) picked up four quick fouls in the first half, and the rest of the team (sans Luka, Rui, and Gabe), including LeBron James (23 points) gained little success in defending the Suns as they quickly pulled ahead and never looked back as they cruised to a 132-108 victory over the Lakers. The Lakers continued on with their holiday road trip with a stop very close to home as they faced the LA Clippers in the Intuit Dome on Saturday night. But the Lakers, short three starters already, fell behind early and never caught up, with only LeBron James (36 points) providing anything resembling offense. Things went from bad to worse as the Lakers added insult to injury by losing Luka Doncic to a leg contusion, giving no support for LeBron, as the Lakers fell victim to the Clippers, 103-88.
