Departing from Duane Linklater’s exhibition mâcistan at Secession, on view through 15 February 2026, Julienne Lorz, Professor for Expanded Museum Studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and curator Haris Giannouras talk about the history and present of, and forms that have shaped institutional critique since the 1960s as well as the ways in which Linklater explores a new way of instituting. Julienne Lorz is Professor for Expanded Museum Studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Since October 2021, the new Master’s programme Expanded Museum Studies has been dedicated to examining, expanding and reorienting the concept of museum in all its facets. Previously she was Chief Curator at Gropius Bau in Berlin and a curator at Haus der Kunst in Munich, having curated and co-curated several international projects, monographic, and thematic group exhibitions including artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Joan Jonas, Laure Prouvost, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, and Haegue Yang. Haris Giannouras works with artists to make exhibitions, artworks, publications and events. He is currently a curator at the Secession in Vienna. Before that he worked at MUSEUM MMK FÜR MODERNE KUNST in Frankfurt am Main and Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach. Duane Linklater Supplies for the Soul During the opening of Duane Linklater’s exhibition mâcistan on 28 November 2025, the performance Supplies for the Soul was acted out by three performers. Listen and enjoy the recording of this unique event. Duane Linklater’s work and practice is grounded on an inspective inquiry on the foundations of institutions as they relate to the contemporary life and histories of Indigenous Peoples. His installations often employ paintings, sculptures, readymade objects, personal belongings, printed matter, images and symbols that he collects and accumulates. This process, linked to the concept of the cache – an enclosement, a safekeep – builds the core for a new body of work the artist presents in his exhibition at Secession. During the opening a live act unfolded. Performed by a singer, a guitarist and a drum set, the new score, or musical soundtrack, titled Supplies for the Soul echoes sonic memories tethered to the multifarious histories of community and powerful tenderness of reclaiming agency, art and institutions. In 2018, Linklater installed pêyakotênaw—a public artwork comprising three large teepee sculptures—along the High Line in New York. He was the 2016 recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for Media Art, and the 2013 Sobey Art Award winner. What can we truly know about ourselves and our histories in an age of hypervisibility, when algorithms and social structures alike decide not only what is seen but what is pushed into invisibility or irrelevance? On the afternoon of 28 November 2025, Mimi Ọnụọha talked about her exhibition Soft Zeros; what she learned about collecting data and organizing it, about the Convict Leasing system and the impact is has had especially on Black lives in the USA, and about collective forgetting and denial over a 2-year research stretch and in the process of creating the new body of work that is presented in the exhibition. Mimi Ọnụọha Soft Zeros 29.11.2025 – 22.2.2026 In Soft Zeros, Mimi Ọnụọha examines the unreliability of archives and the instability of knowledge, exploring how absence and silence – shaped by algorithmic bias, historical denial, and collective forgetting – become meaningful. She points to what has not been collected, asked, allowed, or represented. More Nigerian-American artist Mimi Ọnụọha’s work questions and exposes the contradictory logics of technological progress. Through print, code, data, video, installation, and archival media, Ọnụọha offers new orientations for making sense of the seeming absences that define systems of labor, ecology and relations. Ọnụọha’s work has been featured at the Whitney Museum of Art (NY, USA), the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (AUS), the Mao Jihong Arts Foundation (CN), La Gaitê Lyrique (FR), Gropius Bau (DE), The Photographers Gallery (UK), and Atlanta Contemporary (GA, USA), among others. Hören Sie in dieser Folge den Architekten, Ausstellungskurator, Architekturhistoriker, kritischen Beobachter und Kommentator seiner gebauten Umgebung Otto Kapfinger im Gespräch mit der Architektin Claudia Cavallar. Kapfinger ist seit Mitte der 1970er-Jahre Secessions-Mitglied und hat Mitte der 1980er-Jahre mit Adolf Krischanitz und Oskar Putz die umfassende Sanierung des Hauses verantwortet. In diesem lebendigen Gespräch teilt Kapfinger sein geradezu lexikalisches Wissen über Architektur, Stadtplanung, bildende Kunst, Fotografie und Kulturpolitik, nicht nur im historischen Wien um die Jahrhundertwende, sondern auch aus der Perspektive eines aktiven Gestalters. Diese Folge wurde am 17. Oktober 2025 in der Secession aufgenommen. Otto Kapfinger (*1949) lebt als freier Architekturwissenschaftler in Wien. Er ist Autor von etwa 50 Büchern zur Baukunst in Österreich und Kurator zahlreicher Ausstellungen. 1970 gründete er mit Angela Hareiter und Adolf Krischanitz die Experimental-Architekt*innengruppe Missing Link, die bis zu ihrer Auflösung 1980 künstlerische Aktionen, Performances und Experimentalfilme realisierte. 1985/86 unternahm er im Rahmen der Sanierung der Secession von Adolf Krischanitz umfassende architekturhistorische Recherchen für die Renovierung des Olbrich-Baus. Von 1978 bis 1992 war Kapfinger im Vorstand der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Architektur und von 1980 bis 84 im Vorstand der Secession Wien. 1981 bis 1991 schrieb er regelmäßig Rezensionen und Essays für die Tageszeitung Die Presse. 2019 wurde ihm der Ehrendoktor der Technischen Universität Wien verliehen. Zuletzt leitete er das Forschungsprojekt Anatomie einer Metropole. Bauen mit Eisenbeton in Wien 1890–1918 (Ausstellung im Wien Museum 2025). Claudia Cavallar studierte Architektur bei Hans Hollein und Greg Lynn. Nach Mitarbeit in verschiedenen Architekturbüros, unter anderem bei the next ENTERprise, ist sie seit 2010 selbstständig. In ihrer Arbeit setzt sie sich mit dem Unauffälligen, Zufälligen und Gewohnten in der Architektur auseinander, mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Tradition und Erfindung, Ortsspezifischem und Allgemeinem und dem Einfluss, den Produktionsmethoden der Architektur auf das Ergebnis haben. Seit 2008 beschäftigt sie sich mit der Arbeit von Josef Frank, insbesondere seiner Innenräume, Stoffmuster und Möbel. June Crespo’s sculptural assemblages, which the artist understands as communicating vessels, resonate within our bodies. At times delicate, at others forceful, they always emanate a vital, living quality. Listen to the artist talk about her inspirations and working process. This episode was recorded on 12 September 2025, the day after the opening of the exhibition: June Crespo Danzante 12.9. – 16.11.2025 Most of the works in the exhibition Danzante take their formal vocabulary from the iris and the strelitzia (bird of paradise). Yet the artist is not concerned with representing these plants. Instead of proposing a classificatory symbolic order, they serve as starting points for a deeper engagement with materiality and the evocative potential of surfaces and textures, which take precedence over the pictorial dimension. Crespo treats her materials as agents, understanding herself an assistant to her work rather than an authority figure. In this way, she offers us a visceral experience – an encounter with objects that touch us in our corporeality and heighten our awareness of our own presence and its fragmented condition. Listen to John Smith talk about his most ordinary name and how that possibly has more impact on his work than you’d think; how this inspired him to make the (autofictional) film Being John Smith (2024), one of three films in his Secession show; about the power of language, used both as voice-over and caption, over imagery; and about bad puns. This episode was recorded on 11 September 2025, shortly before the opening of John’s exhibition: John Smith Being John Smith 12.9. – 16.11.2025 In the mid-1970s, John Smith shared the widespread interest in challenging the illusionism of mainstream cinema and subverting apparent divisions between abstraction and representation, between the personal and the political. He did so alongside colleagues from the Royal College of Art, where he trained, and members of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative. From the beginning, he was also fascinated by the capacity of sound – especially of the spoken word – to shape perception or conjure images. Smith handles image, sound, and text flexibly: instead of synchronizing them, he works with interruptions and disruptions – and a lot of black screen in between. He explains: ‘I’m not afraid of having darkness in films because that’s where the imagination works. I really love sound and darkness.’ More Since 1972, John Smith has made over sixty film, video and installation works that have been shown in museums, art galleries and independent cinemas around the world and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. Retrospectives of his films have been presented at film festivals in sixteen countries. This episode is a conversation between architect and Atelier Bow-Wow-founding-member Momoyo Kiajima and curator Haris Giannouras. It was recorded right after the opening of the exhibition Suturing Together by Atelier Bow-Wow on 12 September 2025. Their discussion focuses on care work in architecture, books and their forms in designing and understanding the build environment, 1980s Japanese comedy shows, Sutemi Horiguchi, and the importance of love in building someone’s home. Atelier Bow-Wow Suturing Together 12.9. – 16.11.2025 The exhibition Suturing Together includes a site-specific intervention covering almost the entire right arch of the Secession’s foyer, an extended archive showing the studio’s practice spanning over the last 30 years, a thatch-seating made using thatch in collaboration with students from Vienna and a poster with detailed essays and an analytical index of Atelier Bow-Wow’s past projects. Exploring material networks, supply chains and ad hoc architecture, the term “Suturing” becomes a stand-in for the studio's synergetic approach: piecing together things that have been torn up, forms, communities, histories and memories. She also taught as a visiting professor at the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2003 and 2016, as well as at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2011–2012, at Rice University in 2014–2015, at Columbia University in 2017, and at the Yale School of Architecture in 2023. In 2018, she was the curator of Japanese pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. In 2024, she was appointed to the planning and management committee of TOTO Gallery·Ma and made a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. Im Gespräch mit der Medien- und Filmkünstlerin Constanze Ruhm geht es insbesondere um Werke aus den letzten 20 Jahren, ausgehend von kuratorischen Tätigkeiten, zu denen die Ausstellung Fate of Alien Modes (2003) im Auftrag der Secession zählt, die Diskurszusammenhänge zwischen Film und Kunst ins Licht rückte. Von der Konzeptkunst und vom Interesse für digitale Technologien und mediale Dispositive entwickelten sich die künstlerischen Projekte nach dem Studium Visueller Mediengestaltung bei Peter Weibel hin zur Rekonstruktion filmischer Räume und zur Kritik männlich kodierter Blickregime und Szenarien. Constanze Ruhm erläutert Appropriationsgesten, die sie im Rahmen ihrer Beschäftigung mit weiblichen Figuren der Filmgeschichte entwickelte. Im Laufe ihrer Recherchen, die sie von Filmarchiven zu historischen Orten führen, deutet sie antike Mythen feministisch um und verknüpft sie mit den Rollen realer Figuren, sowie mit zeitgenössischen Kontexten. Ins Zentrum des Gesprächs rückt in diesem Zusammenhang Ruhms Arbeit zum italienischen Feminismus, die ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit Carla Lonzi entspringt. Dies wird unter anderem an ihrem Interesse an Gesten der Unterbrechung und des Widerständigen deutlich, als Möglichkeiten des politischen Handelns, aber auch als Strategien der Selbstermächtigung und des Sichtbarmachens von weiblicher Arbeit und Solidarität. Der Figur der Probe kommt in Ruhms filmischen Essays über Formen des Reenactments und des Castings eine besondere Rolle zu. Sie führt zu einer wesentlichen Frage hin: wie kann der historische Feminismus der 1970er-Jahre aus der Gegenwart heraus betrachtet werden, und was kann er jüngeren Generationen heute sagen? In ihren Installationen, Filmen, fotografischen Serien und Publikationen untersucht sie die Beziehungen unterschiedlicher zeitbasierter Formen zwischen Film, bildender Kunst und Neuen Medien. Dabei erforscht sie deren jeweilige Geschichten und Theorien, oft mit einem Fokus auf Probenprozesse und Strategien des Re-Enactments. Ihre thematischen Schwerpunkte liegen auf Fragen des filmischen Blicks sowie der filmischen Narration und der damit verbundenen Machtverhältnisse, auf feministischen Dramaturgien und Theorien des Films sowie auf der Rolle von Archiven innerhalb einer zeitgenössischen filmisch-künstlerischen Praxis. Ihre zwischen Essay, Fiktion und Dokumentation angesiedelten Werke nehmen insbesondere weibliche Filmfiguren in den Blick, um deren Narrationen aus zeitgenössischer, feministischer Perspektive neu zu erzählen. Die Arbeiten werden sowohl auf der Kinoleinwand als auch in installativen Ausstellungsformaten gezeigt. Sie studierte an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien und an der Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Luisa Ziaja spricht mit Oliver Ressler über seine künstlerische Praxis, insbesondere über seine Videos und Videoinstallationen der letzten Jahre. Eva Schlegel spricht mit der Kuratorin Antonia Hoerschelmann über ihre künstlerischen Anfänge, die prägende Zeit in New York, biografische Einflüsse und die "Alchemie der Materialverwendung". Gemeinsam beleuchten sie entlang ihrer unverwechselbaren Werkserien die Rolle von Raum und Wahrnehmung und wie diese mittels künstlerischer Strategien wie Licht, Spiegelung und Unschärfe erweitert und in Frage gestellt werden. This episode is a conversation between the artist Jeremy Shaw and the curator Damian Lentini. It was recorded on 6 June 2025 in the context of his exhibition, when Jeremy returned to Vienna for the screening of Quantification Trilogy at the mumok. Jeremy Shaw Towards Logarithmic Delay 29.5. – 31.8.2025 The exhibition Towards Logarithmic Delay presents three new sculptural works that engage with the concept of border zones and the disorientation brought about by the dissolution of spatial and perceptual thresholds. The first work visitors encounter, Maximum Horizon (2024), comprises a triptych of stained-glass windows – akin to those commonly seen in churches and other places of worship – that are set into one of a number of a raw, unfinished drywalls that reappear throughout the exhibition. More Jeremy Shaw (b. North Vancouver, Canada, 1977) works in a variety of media to explore altered states of mind and the cultural and scientific practices that aspire to map transcendental experience. He has had solo exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, Paris, France, MoMA PS1, New York, USA, MAC Montréal, Canada, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, Germany, and MONA, Tasmania, Australia, and been featured in international surveys such as the 57th Venice Biennale, Italy; 16th Lyon Biennale, France; and Manifesta 11, Zurich, Switzerland. Ariane Mueller talks with curator Jeanette Pacher not only about her current exhibition in Secession’s iconic exhibition hall, but also speaks about her experience of initiating projects, sharing space, ideas, and resources, and the importance of collaborating – providing broader insight into her creative practice and understanding as an artist. Decades ago, in the early 1990s, she came into contact with the conflict in Yugoslavia through her work on the art magazine Artfan (1991–1996), which she edited together with the artist Linda Bilda. Slovenian writers wanted to place articles in Artfan in which they called for arms supplies to their country in support of its war with Serbia. Unsure how to handle the situation, the artists travelled to Zagreb shortly after the war began. As a delegate to the United Nations for many years, Mueller was later also faced with the Iraq War. Kamogelo Walaza, a curatorial fellow from South Africa, spoke with the artist about his work and the exhibition: Francis Offman Weaving Stories 29.5. – 31.8.2025 The walls of the stairwell that leads to Francis Offman’s exhibition Weaving Stories are covered in dried coffee grounds. The dark tactile material transforms the narrow entrance to the exhibition space on the first floor into an immersive olfactory experience. More The works of Francis Offman consist of canvases (not mounted on stretchers) with irregular contours, featuring paintings that emerge from the associations of sections of vivid, flat, uniform colors, and collage zones made with the insertion of scraps of paper – thin or thicker sheets, salvaged from bread wrappers or shoeboxes – which enter the composition like rips or wounds. An encounter that only on occasion makes elements emerge that can be traced back to the real: a dry tree, a mountain, a portion of water, earth or sky … Offman’s pieces are free compositions that imply fragile references, minimal and understated, to a faraway world (Africa and Rwanda, where the artist spent some of his childhood) and its customs, a traumatic memory and an uncertain identity; jagged, dynamic spaces that cannot give rise to an integral landscape. The deconstruction of the grand narrative of Western modernity that imposes itself across vast territories on this planet lies at the heart of her filmography. In her exhibition at the Secession, Vaz showcases her new film series Meteoro (2023–). Predominantly focusing on Paris and Porto, European cities are depicted as on the verge of collapse or on the path to extinction. More Ana Vaz is an artist and filmmaker born in the Brazilian midwest inhabited by the ghosts buried by its modernist capital: Brasília. Originally from the cerrado and wanderer by choice, Ana has lived in the arid lands of central Brazil and southern Australia, in the mangroves of northern France and in the northeastern shores of the Atlantic. Her filmography activates and questions cinema as an art of the (in)visible and instrument capable of transforming human perception, expanding its connections with forms of life — other than human or spectral. Her film-poems are marked by a constant experimental defiance to the poetic forms of contemporary cinema, highlighting the profound contradictions of our time and questioning, above all, the destructive practices of colonial modernity. Consequences or expansion of her cinematography, her activities are also embodied in writing, critical pedagogy, installations or collective walks. This episode looks back at one of the central artistic positions in the group exhibition Forms of the Shadow. Minouk Lim's Currahee – Stand Alone, a floor-to-ceiling installation of painted military blankets, created a striking division of space and, in the context of the exhibition, could also be read in terms of the divided situation on the Korean peninsula, but also in the broader context of military conflicts, and as such this work is exemplary of current political crises and the latent danger of military escalation. The Hauptraum, the largest gallery of Secession, is one of the earliest and most representative examples of it. Like many artists who have exhibited here, Yuki Okumura took its empty state as a departure point for his working process. But instead of bringing works to this ideal backdrop to isolate art from the world, the artist conceived three site-specific projects to rediscover the space as a lived room interconnected with the world marked by its own conditions and contexts. For each project, Okumura designed a playful procedure and asked people related to the Hauptraum to enact it.
